Should I claim child benefit?

My husband earns over 60k but we are struggling financially with our mortgage and bills and baby stuff. I no longer have an income. I really could do with the money; however, I know that you have to pay back the benefit via taxes the following year if you earn over £60k. Has anyone been in this situation and paid back the money? Is it worth taking out the benefit still? I think you’d still pay back less than you’d get over the year. Any help or suggestions with any other financial help would be great xx

The thresholds have changed and the taper is now 60-80k. It’s adjusted net income not gross as well, so depending on his salary you may get more than you realise.

How much over 60 does he earn? When my the thresholds changed my partner was on 65K and we calculated that we would be entitled to keep 75% of it so we were still better off claiming. Now that he’s closer to the 80 we don’t bother x

Where are you located?

Even if you don’t actually get any money, the time you are on child benefits will count towards retirement so that’s good for you if you don’t work

Thanks everyone, he earns 67k and it goes up to 73k next month. Should I still claim? Should I apply to universal credit too?

You won't get anything from universal credit if your husband is earning that much money

You can still apply, it doesn't hurt to see if they'll accept you're request. I didn't think I'd get anything/very much because together me and my husband warn about 50/60k a year... But I get £102 every 4 weeks for my LO... it's worth putting the application in, it might not be much... but it all adds up x

@Pia everyone can claim child benefit unless your on one of the things that means you can’t but if you or your partner earn over £60k you have to pay some back each year via taxes. I know people who claim it, put it in a high interest savings account and then at the end of each year pay what they need to back but they have a bit extra because of the interest on the account but not sure that would help the OP.

Hey, I earn just over 60k, we claim the benefit. I've been getting around £100 a month, I'm stashing it away in a savings account as I know I'll have to pay some of it back.

How do you pay it back? Does it come out automatically out of your taxes?

Claim it yes you'll have to pay some of it back next year but if it helps your cash flow now then that's something. The more important thing is that it goes towards your national insurance which gives you your pension

You can apply to universal credit and see how you get on. There is no harm in applying. Me and my husband both work full time and are entitled to payments. Xx

Just means you have to pay back 25% when you self assess at the end of year. If you’re confident in doing that then go for it. We were in same situation and went ahead

Thank you so much everyone! That’s really helpful and we could really do with the money right now to help us out. Does it affect my application if I have maternity pay for first few months?

It’s based on the highest earners salary, so your pay doesn’t matter either way as the lower earner.
