Maternity Leave in California

Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had any insight on how to apply for maternity leave in California? I get 12 weeks from my job but I heard that you can get extra time from the state of CA as well? Was just wondering if anyone knew what the process was on that - thanks!

Sorry no help but is that all you get? I’m in south wales (Uk)

@Lucy some places are 6 weeks unpaid in oklahoma

@Grace wow! I’m really shocked at that. Here maternity tends to last around a year and that can start prior to baby being born. I worked up until the day before my daughter was born (she came early at 38 weeks) I then returned weeks before her first birthday. I was paid half my wage for the first 6 weeks of maternity then it dropped to £52 a week for the next 6 months. Then it dropped again a little bit (can’t remember how much) but when pregnant I put money aside each month so I had extra money during maternity to pay bills etc when my income decreased. I had a rough labour ending in theatre with forceps being used and a fourth degree tear. I was still in pain 3 months PP I couldn’t imagine returning to work

@Lucy that's just one reason I think the Uk is better for mothers and families than the US

My job isn’t even offering paid leave and no guarantee of my job when I try to return. (I’ve been with the company over 5 years in NC). Glad to see other places have things in place to help mothers!

California generally has 4 weeks disability pay pre-birth and 6-8 weeks after birth for recovery. You can also take an additional 8 weeks of partial pay for bonding time and then 12 weeks of unpaid leave. You should check with your employer though. If they are offering 12 weeks full paid leave, they sometimes make you take the partial paid state benefits and then the employer pays the difference to get you to full pay.
