Will it hurt?

Hi, I have my first iui soon. Super nervous but also excited. Today i had a follicle scan. I had just 10 small follicles (under 10mm) on the left side but 3 follicles, 15, 13,12 on the right side plus 7 small ones. I will probably take my trigger in 2 days. Will all of the 3 follicles burst at the same time and will that hurt more than normal? Thats my biggest worry at the moment and then of course the iui itself 😬 Also is 6,6 uterine lining okay? I read it should be at least 8???

The IUI itself is a super quick procedure that doesn't hurt at all. If they follicles are mature, they will release or its possible to just release just one. And if the doctor doesnt say your lining is thin, then you should be good. Usually at the scan, they will let you know if they expect it to be thicker. Good luck on your IUI. Im on IUI #2

My IUI was like the pain of a pap smear x10. NOT a fan! Lol. 🙃Afterwards, just light cramping like your period is about to begin. I came home, took a nap, and was totally fine for the rest of the day.

Thank you for your replies. Still not sure about the pain during iui 😅 The nurse called me and said i have to come in for another scan on Wednesday. Also testing estradiol. She said that they would like my lining to grow more. When i asked what i can do she said wait and see. Like what?! Is there anything i can do proactively to support my lining during the next few days?

The medication should help. And every woman is different honestly as it goes for the IUI. I know with me i just felt a quick pinch as the catheter is going into your cervix, did not phase me or cause me pain. and then light cramping after sperm was injected into uterus but other than that, i was fine. Nothing out the ordinary to where I needed like pain meds or anything. I just went back to work afterwards

@Patrice thank you 🙏

You're welcome. Keep us updated. Im currently 7dpiui

I've had 5 IUIs. My first 4 were quite painful. But I have heard that's not usual. Also, my last one was ok after I told the doctor that they had been bad for me and I brought my husband to distract me. That helped a lot.

@Taylor thank you for sharing. My husband is not able to go with me but i will tell the doctor that i am nervous and might listen to music to distract me.

As of today i have one 19mm, one 13 and one 11,5 on the right side. Not quite sure what happened there😅 my lining is 7 and the nurse said it’s right where they want it but i still wish it would be thicker. Any luck with similar measurements?

It’s different for everyone. When I had it i wouldn’t say it hurts at all, it’s just a bit uncomfortable, it’s like having a smear test. But it’s a quick process.

Just wanted to to give you an update. It was horrible! Cramps that i not even felt on my worst days of my period. I threw up and nearly fainted. My blood pressure dropped. Cramps were still bad an hour later. My husband had to pick me up and i was just in bed for the rest of the day. It also didn’t work. Terrified of doing it again!

That definitely doesnt sound like a good experience nor does it sound like it was done properly. I wouldnt recommend another IUI if that happened to you, im sorry you had a bad experience.

Hmm, with ivf they have to transfer the embryo with the same method. Success rates are way higher though right?

Yes the success rates are higher. But i dont know if this is an option for you, but have you tried trying a different clinic because an IUI should not have you feel like that nor have that type of experience. Mines just had a tiny pinch when the catheter went in and that was it. I had mild cramping afterwards for like 2 hrs and then thats it. But since both failed, im moving on to ivf

The clinic suggested ivf when I first met them. I feel like just because it’s a better success rate. We have unexplained infertility. My insurance covers both so it’s an option.

Yeah ivf is covered with my insurance as well. I first started with one fertility clinic and did not like the treatment and the feeling of being rushed so i switched clinics and now I feel more comfortable. My ivf appt is in 8 days so im excited. We wanted to try atleast 2 IUIs before moving on to IVF

I do like my clinic. The nurse who did my iui was so so sorry for hurting me and cancelled other appointments to stay with me. They also remembered me pretty quickly. I think i will stay with them and ask about ivf since it has such a higher success rate.

I'll just add that there is an aspect of clinician expertise at play here. As I mentioned, I had a pretty hard time with my first 4. Not as bad as you mentioned. I never threw up, but I was in so much pain I thought I might. But when I brought this up with my doc she suggested that she personally perform my next one. She was just way more experienced at it then most of the nurses. I have a tilted uterus which can make it hard to find the cervix and change the angle that's necessary. Anyway, it was SOO much better with the doc. My husband came to that one too so I'm not sure how much of the improvement was from him being there vs her doing the procedure. But I just wanted to let you know that if you want to do another one there might be some options to make it less terrible for you.

Good point. I do have a tilted uterus too
