Curious about other mum’s thoughts on this..

Re second hand or preloved toys… I’m currently in the process of machine washing a load of duplo that I bought second hand for my son for his birthday- he’s going to be delighted, a fire station, a police station, a number train, as well as a load of generic bricks, and I’m delighted too, £30 for the lot. Anyway, I mentioned to a relative about it as I was on FaceTime and it was making a noise going round in the wash. Which finally brings me onto the actual point 😅 They made a comment that “at least he’ll get something new for his birthday” when referring to the present they got for my son…. Then another comment made that they “would have thought we (me and my husband) could afford to buy new toys”…. I clarified that we have no issue with buying preloved things, good for the environment, good for my finances, good for my children, plan to sell on when we’re done with it - everyone’s a winner. Explained that yes, we are fortunate to be able to buy all new toys if we felt like we needed to, but in this specific situation the Duplo he’s about to get would have cost me well over £100, and it wont make a blind bit of difference to him where it’s come from- to him, it’s new! So I’m just curious, where do you stand on shopping second hand? Should I, because I can afford to, be buying everything new? Is my son any less lucky because this Duplo was loved by someone else before? Is this any different to my youngest child getting a load of stuff from his older brother, which people seem less offended by? 😂🤔 It feels ridiculous to say- but clearly some people have that opinion! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get second hand. Nothing wrong with it. It's new to them. My boys love a good vinted find and are the ones who said it's someone else's but it's new for us. They're 7&8 x

I buy nearly all of my daughter’s clothes, toys, books second hand! In charity shops, vinted, market place, car boot sales!! I absolutely love it. I also wouldn’t question someone gifting my daughter or even me second hand. They have absolutely no idea if things are new, old, expensive, free so who cares! Save you ££ where you can. That’s a really snobby comment if I’m being honest! X

Second hand is sooo the way forward! It fills me with anger the amount of parents that buy everything brand new then just throw toys away once their child has had their turn of them. These toys have sooooo much life left to give, and so many kids to make happy still, I'd hate to see them all in landfill!! Go you for sticking to your gut!

I don’t understand the issue with second hand. As you said, it’s good for the environment, etc. My mother also seems to have an issue with this when she grew up with nothing. I think it because things have moved on now and they only want the best for their grandkids but I’m absolutely onboard with preloved. I myself rather selling, donating or just giving away for free kids clothes and toys when they’re finished with them. Would hate to see them end up in a landfill when there’s lot of life left to them.

Oh my god I hate the snobbery around second hand! Plastic toys especially are a great thing to buy second hand! We got our older Son paw patrol second hand and the big paw patroller and all the pups and vehicles for £30 it’s would have been almost £200 new, and guess what there was no packaging so he could play with it right away! And he wanted a wrestling ring which is £95 new or we picked up the exact same one second hand for £10… like it’s literally a no brainer and we can afford to buy new too we’d rather just save or get them something else too! Pretty much everything maxi plays with is second hand… third child joys!

We have a mix of both but if I can get it second hand I will 🤣 and then anything my son has grown out of or no longer uses I either sell or donate to a local baby bank. Absolutely nothing wrong with second hand, more people should do this!

We get so much second hand from toys, clothes, furniture, buggies etc, likewise we can afford new but don't see the point as it's much better for the environment and wallet tbh, just give it a good clean and you're good to go ! Deffo agree that more people should do it!

What a ridiculous comment from people! I buy a mix of second hand and new. Like the kids know any different 😂

What’s wrong with 2nd hand. The way I look at it. Your child knows no different and it’s new to them, you are helping environmentally by preventing unwanted toys going to landfill and you save a little money, which usually means in our house, she gets twice as many toys. Everyone’s a winner. Obviously I wouldn’t buy poor condition things and we clean it throughly as you are doing, but most stuff we get is practically brand new and the child just wasn’t interested in it. I might add that (and this isn’t me bragging) that we don’t need to buy 2nd hand financially, but it just makes sense sometimes and more people should do it for environmental reasons than anything else. I hate the stigma attached to pre loved items. If we had all been a bit more sensible decades ago the planet might be in a better state now. Sod ur relative, none of their business anyway. You keep rocking those 2nd hand sales.

Thank you all for sharing- totally agree with you all, obviously! It’s just so judgemental isn’t it? And, if we weren’t in a position where we could afford to buy new toys, clothes or whatever else, speaks volumes about what their opinion would be of how we would be raising our children- to me, the comments from this person and others that share that perception is an issue bigger than just second hand toys, but one of materialism more generally, and a rather elitist outlook. He’s very fortunate that the second hand Duplo is just one of many birthday gifts, of which some are new and some are second hand. I’m not superior for being able to/buying toys new, in the same way that preloved items and those that buy them aren’t inferior. I can’t wait to see him open his presents, new and old! (…. And perhaps secretly hope he snubs the expensive new gift from stupid relative in favour of his second hand goodies to prove my point 😏)

@Hayley wow! Ella is going to love that! They cost a fortune don’t they, but if I can save a few quid here and there (which will inevitably just be spent on the next thing for him anyway 😅) then you best believe I’m going to!

Day to day I will get second hand where I can. Most toys and clothes are second hand. Shoes not unless they are practically new and an expensive brand. My 8yr old has a good understanding of the value of money and how much things cost/ how to spend carefully so it's all good teaching. I have definitely gifted second hand as presents too but only for my own children. Second hand games console/ games, when my eldest was 2 all his peppa pig playsets were from marketplace etc. If it's all good condition I don't care. I can afford new stuff and obviously if it's a cheap item or something specific I will buy new but if not I don't want to spend the money! I feel like I could use the money elsewhere/ in savings whilst my child still gets something they'll love and be none the wiser.

Also the younger generation are following and buying second hand. I see teenagers in charity shops all the time + my sister is pregnant with her first child at 21 and is accepting literally everything baby related I have to keep costs down. Those who think second hand items are beneath them are missing out!

It was my sons birthdat on Monday abd most of his presents were second hand. As you can get more for your money. My lo loves playmobil and he got loads more for birthday secondhand

@Peer95 I had my oldest at 21 (10yrs ago) and I took all the hand-me-downs and at the time it was because of money but now if it’s offered for any of mine I take it cos I know of the short term wear of it! Our second hand toys are loved and used just as much as our brand new toys! With my older 2 wanting to earn pocket money and buy their own things now we always encourage 2nd hand as they can get much more!

@Laura yes me too, I had loads given to me when I had my first at 19! And literally I do the same with my July 21 baby because things are needed for such a short time

I’m a big believer in second hand, I shop in charity shops and 70% of my boy’s clothes and toys are second hand. I can afford new things, I always buy him new shoes and coats, all good brands. And any toys that I can’t find second hand I’m happy to buy new. For me it’s not about the money, it’s about putting more plastic into the world, and also kids know no difference. If someone judged me for that, I would just shrug it off

Crazy that someone would even make that comment 🤣 whether you can afford to buy everything new or not their Interests change so quickly and you can get so much more for your money too! I used to hate getting stuff second hand but now his electric revvi bike he's got for his birthday is second hand as they are over 300 new! He also has a second hand batcave and joker set as he is batman obsessed 🤣 xx

Like you say better for the environment and kids really aren't that bothered when it's something they love. I have got a few bits from boot fairs for my little boys birthday. It also had meant I could spend a bit more on other bits if I wanted.

My daughter’s second Xmas and second birthdays main presents were second hand Facebook finds and they’re her favourite toys! Could we afford it new? Yes, but if I can find it cheaper I’m doing that 😂 children don’t care and it’s more sustainable

This birthday my little boy will be getting a load of hot wheels things we found on market place, we got for £50 and should cost nearly £180 full price. Iv also got him some dress up costumes off vinted - cheaper and the shops don’t have the character or his size in at the moment. We’ve had play doh cut outs, Duplo and Schleich animals off vinted in the past. He’s always been so chuffed. Making the most of it now before he’s older and wants designer trainers 😅🤦🏻‍♀️

@Violet my son’s also a big playmobil fan! Absolutely something I would pick up second hand for him!!

@Eve I know- but this person has made more than a few backhanded out of line comments in the past, about all sorts of stuff that’s none of their business 🫠 And yes- like you have no idea sometimes what’s going to be a hit and what isn’t, or how long it’ll hold their interest, so if I don’t have to pay full whack for something then I won’t!

@Rachel yes- he’s got his whole life to demand things we can’t buy second hand, let me have my fun whilst he’s young enough to not care at all! 😂

We have so many 2nd toys. I do buy some new because sometimes it's just easier to get it on Amazon than trawling marketplace for something specific but otherwise the children have no concept of it being new and when you can get more toys for the money that's a win! There has also been a few things I have bought for Jack in the past that he's not really been into so I'm glad I didn't pay the full price! Can't remember the last time I bought Jack brand new clothes either, all from Vinted. No point when they just get stained! It's odd for them to be so judgemental over it, when children are at nursery they aren't playing with brand new toys and they're being played with by multiple children so what does it matter at home!

I hate the price of new toys so always look on facebook vinted etc first! Its such a waste else. Most of his new things have been presents from family friends for birthdays Christmas x

Who doesn’t love preloved stuff! Duplo cost a fortune. For future though - duplo does great in the dishwasher too 😉
