stat maternity leave/maternity allowance

i'm employed and self employed. my statutory maternity pay is working out approximately 135 pw for 39 weeks. maternity allowance is 185 pw as long as i've paid class 2 national insurance contributions. can i choose between the two or will i automatically be given maternity pay at the lower amount? it's all very confusing, appreciate any help thank you x
