Cannot agree on a name!

My husband and I have really different ideas when it comes to naming our baby boy. His list is: 1. Cecil (he is pretty set on this one) 2. Hubert/Albert/Cuthbert (basically any "bert names) 3. Frederick My list is relatively long: 1. Jasper 2. Logan 3. Rowan 4. Matthew 5. Milo 6. Thomas 7. Edward 8. Wesley Plus more... We just can't seem to get on the same page. He has chosen the middle name (which is also his middle name) James, which I could see as a first name but he only wants it as a middle name, so I'm a bit lost on how to actually find something we both like! If anyone has gone through this please let me know how you managed to come up with something you both could agree on!

Hey, we had difficulty too. I have two boys so I chose the eldest name and my partner chose the second. We couldn’t choose a name unless the other person didn’t mind it. They didn’t have to love it but as long as they didn’t really dislike it. Also whoever chose the first name then the other chose the middle name! Not a great way of deciding but that’s what we had to do in the end 😂 x

My husband and I were the same way. Our first son is actually Theodore James lol and our second is Wesley 😂 I loved the name Finnegan, might have to use it if we have a third lol but that’s a big if. We really only had issues coming up with girls names cause we didn’t find out gender until after baby is born but luckily we never had a girl cause we still couldn’t decide lol. I ended up writing the longest list possible of names I at least somewhat liked because he really didn’t like the name I was absolutely set on. It seems like your husband really likes older names and you like more modern names for the most part. I really don’t have much advice other than good luck

I love Elijah James 🤍✨

Albert Edward James?

I feel like if he’s chosen the middle name surely you should get to choose the first?

@Harriet Rose totally agree with this! Also sorry but Cecil sounds like a girl's name 😅 your poor kid will be bullied at school. Maybe it's because I am French and Cécile is a girl's name. Anyone else thinks the same? I love your list of names! Same as what's been said, as long as you don't hugely dislike it, you should both at least like it or not mind it. I do think you should get to pick the name. My dad picked my name, my mum picked my sister's name. My husband and I are fairly set on a couple of names we love but there are some he likes or I like that have been vetoed.

I thought Cecil is a girls name

Try the Babyname app. It’s great for helping to come up with names you haven’t thought of and you will both like. You basically swipe on the names you like and get a match if you both like them. My husband has only ever liked one name I suggested for a girl so that is what our daughter’s name will be. (If we have a girl, we have kept the gender a surprise)

@Anna ooh thanks! We've been tying kinder and it's been absolutely horrible! The names on there are shocking! 😂 Whilelmina, legend, gertrud, socorro, astrophel, ifemelu, demetrius... Like what the actual f! And we picked only British names. It's wild on there

Wesley James sounds pretty amazing. Edward, Thomas with James sound great too. Your list makes it easy. Cuthbert though? Like the caterpillar?

Our rule was my husband chose her first name and then I chose her middle names. Maybe you should have the same rule. He chooses the middle name so you can choose the first name

I think either Albert (Albie) from his list or Edward from yours are a similar vibe.

We didn’t have a single name we agreed on and ended up on one that he really likes and I ‘didn’t mind’. Well, by three months I genuinely hated it and he’s now 10 months and I still hate it. It’s Louis (Loo-ee) but loads of stupid people read it as Lewis 🤦🏻‍♀️ plus because people in the uk have changed the name spelling to Louie he’s going to have to tell people how to spell it and tell people how to pronounce it. I didn’t want my child to have one of those names. 😭😭😭 I don’t use his name unless I have to as I really don’t like it.

@Lara oh noooo 🙈 I like Louis, also explaining spelling may make people remember him more. With a name like mine I almost changed it when I moved to the UK but glad I didn't. That's very annoying that they pronounce it as Lewis though. My husband likes Lewis and I don't particularly like it but I like Louis. It's French I think. Louie is just weird 😅 you'd add an e at the end for feminine things. I'd teach your kid to be proud and confident of his name! Hope it'll grow on you. 😬🙈🤞🏼

Tell him he can pick the middle name and if he wants the first name too he's going to have to push a baby out of his vagina

@Lara there was a Louis in my 6th form and I know of another Louis with the spelling. I definitely wouldn't think 'Lewis' It's a really cute name too honestly

Love your list, Wesley, Rowan, Jasper and Rowan in particular. Here are some ideas that may bridge the gap between you: Rupert James Lachlan James Declan James Atticus James Warwick James Lucas James Colin James Alfred James Bennett James Maxwell James

@Rachel 😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

My partner is Matthew and his brother is James so they go well 😂 I found boys names really hard compared to my daughter but did end up agreeing about 12 hours after baby boy was born xx

You both seem to like more classic, vintage names. I'm sure you'll find the perfect name. How about - Jack Patrick William Edmund Alexander Benjamin Michael Charles Alfred Arthur Kevin Wilfred August Archibald Atticus Andrew Bennett Christopher Cooper Daniel Declan Dominic Elias Evan Franklin Finley George Harrison Henry Hugh Hugo Isaac Iasiah Jackson Jude Luca Lachlan Liam Leo Marshall Maxwell Nolan Nicholas Oliver Owen Ryan Samuel Theodore Also, if either of you is set on a name, the other doesn't like, it makes it hard to move on, so be very clear the name isn't an option. Good luck!

@Aurélie merçi. I hope so too as he won’t agree to change it. 😭

@Peer95 yeah I never considered it at all but so many people (even consultants at the hospital) say Lewis 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Lara oh dear, that's so annoying! 🙈 I don't get why people wouldn't ask about pronunciation. Maybe if you hate it still in like 3 month time then ask to change it. 😬 You should have been able to veto it!

Hey, I think Jasper Thomas and Edward are quite similar to the ones on the dads list. Does he not agree? We took our top 5, which were acceptable for both (make him generate an extra 2) and ranked them, because we ended up with more than one that both found acceptable in the end. Then the one with the most points (eg, 2nd or 3rd ranked for both) won. However then at 39 weeks my bf changed his mind and said we could use Frederick as its what I always dreamed of naming my baby and I guess he realised what I was going to have to go through and he decided he liked it enough whereas the name we had agreed I don't like at all. I literally just think it's OK! So imagine if baby had come early he would have been called Lukas instead 😅
