Passports

Canadian moms ! For those of you who do not have their child’s father listed on the birth certificate, did you still need their permission to sign for passport or consent to take your little one across the border ?

I still needed a letter from the court stating I am the sole parent and it had to be stamped/signed. In my case it is a separate court order, but my child’s sperm donor is not on the birth cert so I need to prove that I’m allowed to leave the country without someone else’s permission.

Thank you ! Did you have your involve him in any way? Was custody already established before the court wrote a letter?

No you don't need anything from the father. Don't even fill out the father's info on the passport application, leave it blank. Just send the original birth certificate with your application. And when you travel there won't be any problem either. I've done it in 2022 and we traveled to many countries. All the best 🙂

I couldn’t travel without his permission or a court order and my ex isn’t on the birth certificate.

I don’t have him on the birth certificate. I have left the country two times with my daughter and had no problem. I didn’t need any papers signed

With my first born I didn't put the dad on the birth certificate and did not have to get permission to get her passport

By the sounds from my lawyer, they don’t always check. But if they do, you need proof.

@Sarah he wasnt involved at the time I wanted to travel and no custody hadnt been established at that time either. I was offered to go to court to get a temporary travel pass but i declined and just decided to go through the court process which i got sole custody and now i can travel with my court order. I have heard that its at random the immigration officers ask for the paperwork work however failure to produce it they will not let you enter or exit the country. Not sure if thats accurate I was just told I couldn’t.
