"Safe name" or more "out there" name??

Mine and my husbands naming style can swing from the most common mainstream names (think top 10) to wildly obscurešŸ™ˆ so do we go for a safe name that we maybe dont love 100% but would allow our child to blend in with society unseen or go with a more obscure name that we love but others may find strange?? Our current "safe" names Luca Kai Isaac Matthew Sebastian Ellis Our current out there names Maverick Castiel Loki Kairos Leonidas Creed

Loki is a bit out there and Luca is a bit common but otherwise Iā€™d say these are all sweet spot names where people know and can spell them but there probably wonā€™t be 3 in their class

Wb Isaac Leonidas

I don't want to be offensive, but please don't name your child as if they're a character in a fantasy book. They're a real life person who will have to carry this name for the rest of their lives, through school and potential teasing, through serious job interviews. Although it's great to be unique, we do have naming conventions for a reason. You obviously want to love the name of your child, but giving them a name that's really strange can make things difficult for them in life and cause issues. I'm sure there's a middle balance between the options you've provided. Perhaps a 'safe' first name you love aka Sebastian and a more quirky middle name like 'Castiel' so you still have some of your personalities in there but it won't have a dramatic effect on them, as it's just a middle name and they can choose how often they wish to use/include it. (Personally I actually think Sebastian Castiel is a nice name! <3 or like Monica suggested, Isaac Leonidas)

@Alexandra none of these are based off naming after a fantasy book. My husband is greek hence kairos and leonidas. Im from Norway, hence Loki. Castiel and creed are just names we like.

Maverick is cute

I donā€™t think they are that out there tbh. If your kid ends up wanting to ā€œblendā€ he can pick a nickname like Rick or Leo. And whoā€™s to say he wonā€™t hate having a ā€œsafeā€ name? My name was considered extremely weird where I grew up but I love it. Itā€™s your baby! Pick the name you love. I think as long as youā€™re not naming your child something deliberately provocative like Satan, or making an obtuse effort at spelling (Lowquix instead of Loki, itā€™s a silent x) youā€™re fine.

Unique names are the norm now. (Not sure where you're from), but look at the top 100 names for 2023 in Australia. Kai #28 Sebastian #32 Leo #3 Leon #62 Leonardo #84 Luca #10 Luka #58 Maverick #119 Isaac#35 I love Castiel as a first name, but out of your three uncommon names I'd choose Loki.

I know they're not actually based off, I said as if :) (for example Maverick, or Loki because of the rise in the Avengers movies). My family is also Greek but my main point was that if you're living in a place where such names aren't common they can cause issues. You yourself acknowledged some were strange. So I just suggested they're probably best suited for middle names as a compromise so you could have both the things you wanted: a name that allows them to blend in a little as a first name and then a more unusual middle name :) hope you come to a decision you love!

I personally dont like Leonidas & Creed together, it sounds like a game character. Both names are nice though so itā€™s definitely not odd if paired differently. Then again, most of the time people donā€™t share their middle names so itā€™s not a big deal its not going to be on their resume or anything if you do like them together

Why not choose a safe name for the first name and more unusual one for the middle name? You can still use the out there name as a nickname but it gives your child a little more flexibility to choose what they go by as they get older.

I went for the middle ground with my youngest 2 Not common but not wacky

You can do both. We did Ace, Axel, and Alphonse. We gave them all average or normal middle names to even it out(Ace Ryan/Axel John/ Alphonse Evan) Axel ended up being pretty popular year he was born though, oh well it sounded good with Ace.

Combine the two! Go for a unique first name that you love, paired with a ā€˜safeā€™ traditional middle name. Best of both worlds. Maverick Kai Maverick Luca Loki Sebastian Leonidas Matthew šŸ’™

We went with an old fashioned unique first name & a safe middle name. But we didnā€™t decide until after weā€™d met him & his original name didnā€™t fit šŸ˜‚

Sebastian Creed sounds nice. Or Maverick Ellis.
