Hospital name tag

Bit of a difficult one… I know the baby’s name has to be the same as mums on their hospital tag… but I’m currently in the middle of a long processing divorce from my ex wife (due November with my boyfriends baby). Obviously we don’t want the baby to have my exes name on his tag… is there a way to get this changed to my maiden name, or dads surname in case the divorce isn’t finished in time? Sitting here sobbing at the thought of my baby having my ex wife’s name 😭😭

Hearing different rules from other countries is really interesting. Here in America you’re baby can have any last name u choose. That sucks you guys cant do that over there especially in ur situation. I really hope it all works out for you

@Keona this is the uk - I get why they have mums name in case of issues with identity etc, but it’s heartbreaking that my poor boyfriends first baby (mine too) may have someone else’s name until he’s registered

I’m not 100% sure of the rules but people change their names all the time by deed poll. If you’re changing back to your maiden name anyway could you do this potentially? If you change it with your GP would it then link through to the NHS x

@Holly the GP needs proof of divorce before they can change it. I don’t really want to spend the money on a deed poll just to go back to my maiden name, to then change again in future when we get married x

Do you have your ex wife’s surname now? On my baby’s hospital tags it said Female Infant of First Name Surname that’s in a UK maternity ward

@Lan yeah I appreciate that. Such a shame for you to have to deal with this! I hope you find a resolve x

@Lauren yes, there’s a delay in the divorce so I don’t think it’ll be finalised before baby is born

You could probably request it. When baby was born it was a blur but I kind of remember them asking even though I'm married what we would like baby known as. So my red book has baby " Then my surname"

Personally I'd just change to my partner's name by deed poll. Saves doing the name update hassle again after you get married and that way you get to match your baby when they get their official name. This was my plan if I'd gotten pregnant before me and my now husband got married. I told him if I'm having his baby I'm having his name, married or not 😂

Ohhhh your situation is so similar to mine 🙈 not the name part because my wife and I double barrelled our names and even though we tried to change it twice with the gp they just kept reverting it back to my maiden name (thankfully now!!) but I am expecting in August with my first child after 12 years with her and I feel like everyone is looking at me weird 😅 I hope everything goes ok for you ❤️

Thanks everyone! I’ve opted to go for changing my name via deed poll (it wasn’t as expensive as I thought) as the delay could take up to 6 months more 🥲

Wait I had no idea this was the case! My husband and I have different surnames and baby is going to be registered with Dad’s. Is this just for the hospital tag? I assume when we register him he can have whatever name we want, yes?

@Liz yes, just the hospital tag. Once you register the baby, they can have whoever’s surname you’d like x

You can legally change your name even if you're still married, then it'll be your maiden name

The band has to have yours ‘baby X’ but once you’ve got a name you can put whatever so ours stayed baby X with GP/hospital as we weren’t sure but the dat after birth they asked what sd wanted it to be
