Piriton pregnancy

So I’ve worried myself, I went to the pharmacist for some hayfever relief and she told me I can’t take anything, so I called my midwife to ask the same thing and she said you can take piriton no problem, so I’ve bought the over the counter ones and been taking since. For some reason I googled it today and a lot of mixed opinions if you can take it or not so I’ve worried myself sick over it. I am sure I took piriton during my first pregnancy but now I’m not sure, anyone else taking piriton and can ease my mind. Hayfever triggers my asthma so I really needed some relief

Piriton maybe not the best option as it’s drowsy antihistamine. I discussed this with midwive yesterday and she said if taking antihistamine pills then to go for non drowsy. I am using Beconase nose spray ( corticosteroid spray) as the active ingredient stays mostly in nose ) and after my research it’s what gp is recommending in pregnancy. But always best to do your own research or check with gp x

Both my midwife and the gp said Loratadine is fine, which is good cause it’s relatively cheap to get the non branded version! x

Have a look at boots own ones, I’m allergic to piriton and have to take them. And they don’t have the stuff that makes you drowsy. But again I would check before taking x

I'm breastfeeding and struggled with this too. I bought Clarityn yesterday. Is this the one that is best? Thank you

Loratidine and Certrizine is fine but also the Piriton Cloraphenamine, the cloraphenamine MAY make you drowsy but it didn't with me. Tbh. My Hayfever was making me feel more drowsy and poorly than that did. Loratidine and Certrizine do nothing for me so I did the same research and found Cloraphenamine. The pharmacist told me the same thing. I had to show her the NHS website! I don't take it daily, but as it's one of the ones that kicks in straight away, I only take it if I really have to!

The common ones you can't take are Acrivastine (not tested or research in pregnancy) and Fenofexadine - this is in Allevia and Treathay. Fenofexadine is the one that has been shown to possibly affect fetal growth in animals.

Piriton tends to be clorenfedamine which I don't think you can take while breast feeding but loretadine, citirazine and fexofenadine I believe are fine

I have terrible hayfever I was. Told by one nurse it’s fine and by another it’s not. I was so fed up with the mixed advice I just left it in the end ! Did my head in lol x

@Amy honestly I just went back to the pharmacy and said is there anything else I can take as piriton is making me drowsy and her face ….. she said who’s told you to take that, I said my midwife and she went well when I was pregnant I didn’t take anything …. Good for you lol anyway I’ve bought becodefence nose spray it says suitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding 🤣🙈
