Cost of Progesterone UK?

Hi all, Hoping someone might be able to give some clarity to my situation. I saw a private fertility consultant this week, I had 2 losses last year. I mentioned Progesterone and he seemed pretty blasé about it “it’s expensive but you can try it if you want?” He sent over a prescription with the fee of £1850! Before committing to this (and having to set up a side hustle of selling feet pics 😂), I’m just trying to manage my expectations, has anyone else had Progesterone prescribed privately? And if so, is this the going rate? It seems extortionate!

I paid privately in December to see a consultant but he said he would see us on an nhs basis after that initial appointment because we weren’t entitled to nhs treatment for IVF treatment as my partner has previous kids, but we were just asking for testing etc (2 previous losses like you.) we were entitled to testing on the nhs though. he put in place a plan to complete various tests on us (at no cost to me) and as it happened I fell pregnant naturally in March so he put me straight on progesterone pessaries. Only once I had fallen pregnant though. All it cost me was the standard £9-something prescription price! Then once I got my maternity exemption certificate - nothing!

Have you tried asking your GP? I’ve had multiple private rounds of treatment and went to see my GP to see if they could help me with prescribing me a few things to help me save some costs. My gp has put my steroids and cyclogest on repeat for me so I get 3 boxes now for the price of one prescription charge. Even though my cycles are private. I think it depends on your gp though, but worth an ask x

@Amy 1,260 pessaries?!? That’s 84 boxes!!! That’s wild. There’s no way you’d ever need that many. Let’s say you needed 3x a day (which is what I was on) for 14 weeks (I took them from CD15 to 12 weeks) you’d only need 20 boxes maximum, which really shouldn’t come to any more than £300. Go back to him and tell him you don’t need that many as you only have the one vagina in which to insert them!

@Sharon I thought this!! I’m on 2 per day. NICE guidelines say they should be given up till week 16 so even if you said 2 x per day. X 30 days = 60 per month x 4 months…that’s 240 pessaries!

@Sarah And there’s no reason why you can’t order more if you need them. My clinic never made me buy more than I needed for each cycle. This guy is mad.

@RD I called my GP ON Thursday and I’m awaiting a reply. GP sent a message to medicine management to see if they could prescribe progesterone - she said it could be specialist only to begin with. 🤞🏼🤷🏽‍♀️

@Sharon 😂😂😂 you make an excellent point! A friend of mine also pointed the quantity last night - I’d been blinded by the cost but you’re so right, the math ain’t mathing Mr Consultant man!

@Sharon thank you for confirming my suspicions - this guy is MAD. I thought maybe I was super naive to the private fertility world…(I like to think I’m pretty switched as I used to be a nurse) but 🤯

@Amy There are always shady characters out there who will take your money and don’t really care about the outcome - it’s a minefield. I was with Care Fertility, who were pretty good. You can also check your provider’s HFEA rating on the website.

@Sharon he came recommended by my friend who actually works for my local NHS fertility centre! He’s the regional clinical lead so I’m really hoping it’s been some kind of honest mistake but you’re so right, horrible people pray on the desperation of people with fertility issues - it’s soo sad! 😑
