Do I need to collect colostrum?

I’ve been seeing lots of people collecting but I haven’t once collected. Is it something I’m supposed to do or need to do? And if so why do I need to?

You don’t have too you will have plenty once baby is born for the first 10-15 days it’s colostrum then turns Into mature milk , you can collect it as much before mature comes in yes if you like to have for baby nutrients

I talked to a lactation consultant, and she said that unless there’s specific concerns that have led a doctor or lactation consultant to recommend collecting ahead of time, you shouldn’t stress about collecting it before baby arrives. If you want to, sure, go for it, but there’s no actual need.

Awesome. Thank you guys!!

I think it’s somewhat new of a thing people are doing mainstream- like my mom had never heard of it! But some benefits are if you’re planning on breastfeeding anyways it can help to have the colostrum ready to feed in the hospital in case you’re not producing enough and then you don’t have to worry about using/supplementing with formula which is what they’d use if needed. Also I think if you’re end up getting a c-section or any complications it can delay when you’re ready to feed so having some available ensures they have some food! (Again just ensures that you have a backup but otherwise they can just use formula!)

Of course! I was honestly concerned about this too, because I haven’t been leaking and social media was making me feel “behind” by not having a colostrum stash, but speaking to the LC about it and having her reassure me that it wasn’t at all necessary or something I should feel stressed or pressured over was a great relief.

No need to just some choose to I never have any am on 6th kid some I guess just start leaking so to prevent loss or what not they choose to collect it

I didn’t with my first and breastfed for 2.5 years fine, so I’m not too worried this round. I know it’s a thing some moms do and it brings them comfort and reassurance

I'm only collecting just so if something happens baby girl will still have something

No need really. Maybe just for peace of mind. A lot of mamas don’t even make any before birth. I didn’t with my first and I’ve only made a drop or two in the last week this time. I’m not planning to collect or express because I can opt for donor milk in the hospital if needed.

No the baby will collect the colostrum when they come! This is my third baby and I never have collected anything before birth.

I'm doing it this go round because I struggled to latch with baby in the hospital and pumping on demand (a crying baby) ain't it.😆 I didn't want her on formula at first but was scared she wasn't eating and gaining. Will be trying again this go round 👏🏾so far have about 30-40 ml saved
