Insurance: IUI and IVF (US)

My insurance notified me that if I were to need to do IUI or IVF it would not be covered at all under my insurance. Do I just have terrible insurance, or is there just not any insurance providers that provide any coverage for these? I think the stupidest part is that I have coverage to be diagnosed as infertile and prove IUI and IVF as medically necessary, but don’t get the actual procedures even slightly covered. How on earth do people pay for these procedures if insurance doesn’t at least help?

I was in the same position. We got super lucky to where about insurance updated to cover those procedures. Depending on the clinic they do offer payment plans for the procedure. I know we still had to pay an out of pocket fee for like 5k to get our cycle going. Don’t lose hope.

I mean the only reason anything has been covered for me is because NJ state law requires fertility care to be covered. Even so though I've had ALOT of trouble getting the meds covered even they are supposed to be by law. So insurance companies are schiesty af and will really try to not cover anything they don't have to

Hey @Lauren, if you don’t mind me asking, what type of procedures have been covered for you? I live in Jersey and I was told it’s not covered under my insurance as well.

@Lauren just to clarify, it is not state insurance that is required to cover fertility care? I’m curious if my state has coverage for fertility then. My state allows for 24 weeks of family leave (12 paid), so I’m curious if they are also progressive in the sense of fertility treatments.

@Ali nope it's all insurance. I mean it does specify that state insurance has to cover it as well but it's blanket for all insurances.

@Natalie all my rounds of IUI were and up to 4 egg retrievals and IVF

@Lauren did you have to fight with the insurance to cover the bills?

It is just now recently that fertility treatments are starting to be covered. Not all states require it to be yet though

For Washington State- they are working to pass a bill that would require coverage. Not required right now.

@Natalie not thr appointments. So far my only issue has been the medications. Some aren't required to be covered but the injectables are and I'm still trying to get reimbursed. But for all my appointments I've only had to pay my copay

@Lauren oh wrote that sounds like a pain. Good luck on your journey!

@Amie that’s kind of what I gathered from the research I did. The governor is not re running so hopefully whoever takes his place follows through with it. I’m not sure I’ll end up doing IUI or IVF either way as I don’t have an issue conceiving exactly, just not staying pregnant. But I know if I keep going at this rate it may be in my future.

@Ali have they tested your progesterone/ put you on progesterone supplements when you get pregnant? That could be a cause for recurrent miscarriage.

@Amie not exactly. I have primarily had chemicals. After my miscarriage where I was further along we did clotting tests and I was on hold during that process. My most recent pregnancy fell right before going to a conference and by the time I got back my tests were getting lighter. The plan was to test progesterone when I got my HCG testing done. I have since asked about having supplements ready for when I get a positive, but the doctor wants me to wait until I have a positive test to prescribe it.
