Copper IUD Q

Hi all, I’m based in Sydney Australia. Due to various complications during my pregnancy & postpartum I cannot get any birth control that is hormonal so only option is copper IUD as it’s hormone free. I have never had one, I googled & most say it’s extremely painful to be inserted. I can’t be sedated as I won’t have anyone to pick me up afterwords so I’ll be driving myself home so it will be just local anaesthetic. Very nervous. Any advice or experience? TIA

Heya 👋🏽 I have a copper IUD and it’s my second one. I love it. First one was pre-kids. Second one I got while I was having my c section for my second born. I obviously had an epidural and meds during the second insertion so felt nothing. In my experience it was very painful to get put in the first time around. Absolutely horrendous. However I still recommend it as I love that it’s not hormonal any lasts for ages. If you’re able to, take someone with you to hold your hand. Everyone’s experience is ofc different but I have heard it’s less painful after having children bc of changes to your cervix

@Jessica thanks lovely for your reply! Were you able to take any pain relief beforehand like Nurofen? And did it help or was the pain that terrible? I still need it done but just like to know what to expect :)

The pain wasn’t bad getting it inserted like i wouldn’t say it was unbearable. But I’ve had mine about 9/10 months and it’s the worst thing I’ve done tbh. I was the same i wanted something hormone free but my periods got so heavy i have to change my tampon every hour and during the night up to 3 changes and i still wake up leaking bad! And the pain during my period and up to two weeks after i stop bleeding is awful so i have to get it removed not sure what to do going forward!
