NHS Funding

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue, and can advise me. Our areas NHS funding allows us to have one full IVF cycle and 2 FET. During our first cycle our clinic and consultants set out a plan to have the EC, then a FET, as I posed a high risk of OHSS. We had our EC in August 2023, a FET in December 2023, then another FET in April 2024. We have now basically been told we have used all our funding and will need to privately fund. We was not given the option to have a fresh transfer during our EC cycle and feel we have had a transfer from us. I know we are extremely lucky to have funding, but it just feels somewhat unfair. TIA

Hi @Hannah - firstly I’m sorry to hear your transfers weren’t successful. Hang on in there. It will happen. When we obtained nhs funding we were told it was 1 egg retrieval and 2 transfers. If we retrieved no eggs then unfortunately that was the funding exhausted. If we fertilised 3+ embryos, then the funding would cease after 2 transfers. If we fertilised 2 embryos and the first was successful, then funding ceases. It’s certainly not a perfect system. I think it’s designed to give as many people as possible the opportunity to obtain funding (and even then it’s hugely unequal between counties).

Ours only allows 1 harvesting, if. It doesnt work its your cycle over :(

I went to prague to continue our journet, medication and treatment is so much cheaper and better. I didnt get an embryo beyond day 2 on the nhs. Im now 36 weeks.

If they said you were at high risk of OHSS and went ahead and transferred anyway that would not have been in your best interests and would have actively caused you harm. So I know if feels like you've had an opportunity taken away, but unfortunately it's the reality of IVF, unknown and unforseen things happen. I did get OHSS, despite being told I had very few follicles right before EC. So on the day when we were told we weren't having a fresh transfer it felt like I was being cheated out of a chance. OHSS is the absolute worst pain I've ever been in and the poorliest I've ever been, I ended up being hospitalized for treatment. If I had had an embryo implant and produce HCG it would have made me very very unwell. So although it felt horrible at the time, it was absolutely the right course of action.

I had this. We’re only allowed 2 cycles and egg collection (which resulted in a freeze all due to risk of OHSS) counted as one. We’ve since had a FET which resulted in a MMC and that’s our lot done. We appealed and it didn’t get us anywhere so having to fund next time. Seems very unfair x
