New or Used

My boyfriend and I have finally told our families that we are expecting and everyone couldn’t be more excited !! They are offering to buy us some stuff, which we appreciate. Is it selfish of us to not really want super used items ? I feel kind of bad for turning down help. I don’t expect top of the line items, but I just don’t know how I feel about used items that I am unsure who used them before.

I personally find it easier to buy second hand clothes as they grow out of them so fast but other than that, everything has to be new

Instead of just taking everything I look through anything offered and pick what I think we will use or it’s made clear I don’t have to feel obligated to keep it. I personally don’t care if it’s new but I’ll pass on anything questionable.

Be cautious of anything with safety standards (cribs, carseats) that is used, and certain toys, but in terms of clothes I think there's definitely nothing wrong with used that are in good shape. They grow so fast that they will only wear them for a month or two, and used are also pre-washed and shrunk so it's easier to judge the size. We have a mixed of used and new personally; for sleepers we are a little pickier because I like Carter's quality and refuse to get anything without the double zipper. But for cribs and so on if you don't want them, at least you have the fallback excuse of safety standards!

Thanks ladies. I totally don’t mind the clothing being used because yes they are going to grow so fast. It was more strollers, car seats and cribs ☺️

Certain things I for sure never wanted used like crib mattresses but car seats I would consider if it was very close family and I trusted them. But asking for things to be new or in like new condition is definitely okay especially for your first

When I was pregnant, the only things that I was certain I wanted new were a crib mattress and car seat. For safety, they were the two items I felt were necessary to buy new. Everything else I either bought used or was a gift for my baby shower. I think that approach has worked out really well and saved me a lot of money!

I got a basinet used at a yard sale for my nephew we just bought a new mattress for it and it's been used for 4 babies in the family

I will definitely change the crib mattress but my Aunt is giving me the crib my cousin had for both girls and it was bought new around 5 or 6 years ago... as long as it isn't broken anywhere I'm not sure why I would mind it. I personally got some used maternity clothes. The only thing I heard not to buy used is like reusable diapers or breast pumps.

Used clothes are great. I have also taken second hand for everything and not really had issues. You just need to make sure you do real deep cleaning of things. This was because I took a foster baby and I kept the stuff to decode to reuse it for my own when it comes.

Clothes, crib (not the matress), toys, things you can wash and clean, why not? But shoes, car seat or items that you know that are not safe (as walkers or others) feel free to say that you dont want...

@Beverly you can buy reusable diapers if the washing routine is ok, i have lots of them used and desinfected them até first wash...

The only things I would buy new are the car seat and the bassinet or crib. Those are definitely non-negotiable. Everything else can be purchased second hand plus it'll save you lots of money. Of course you don't want to much second hand it's nice having something new for the baby. Do what feels best for you mama.
